TITO RIDES IN: ‘The late Mexican trombonist, famously elusive during his colourful life, posthumously releases the finest album of 2001’. Rhythm Magazine, July 2001. STILL SMOKIN': ‘From the get-go 'Ruud Boy' gives you a flavour of what's ahead and it just gets funkier and more soulful as the record spins its course'. Drummer Magazine, June 2004. CLICK HERE to read full review ONE FOR THE MUCHACHOS : ‘A bubbling set of blaxploitation grooves from Tito Lopez -- aka UK funky drummer Harbans Smith, working here in a style that recalls the glory days of the early acid jazz scene! Harbans and crew take their cues from the best late 60s and early 70s work on Prestige, People, and any number of American indie labels at the time -- and groove in a style that has bits of the JBs, Rusty Bryant, and Johnny Pate. The core sound is nice and lean -- very stripped down no-nonsense classic funk -- done in a style that's more professionally topped-off than the Soul Fire/Desco crew, but with an appeal that's equally classic. Titles include "Jazminski", "One For The Muchachos", "The Odd Three", "Metering On", "Gooms", "Wingop Two", and "Miracle Maker". Dusty Groove America, October 2004. STILL SMOKIN': ‘The best album to date from funky drummer Tito Lopez -- aka Harbans Srih, one of the best players on the UK deep funk scene! The album's got a laidback, tripped-out, slow funk style that's really great -- very much in a blacksploitation soundtrack mode, with heavy Harbans drums on the bottom, lots of wah wah and keys in the middle, and some soaring horn passages over the top! The sound of this one is really right too -- produced with just the right amount of dirt in the mix, so that the tunes snake around with a solid rootsy funky feel. Titles include "Smokey Bacon", "Ronaldo", "Get Zigged", "Ruud Boy", "High Plains", "Green Chilli", "Right On Brother", and "India's Groove". Dusty Groove America, October 2004.
